這本書會讓妳不寒而慄又不血腥，也是讓我愛不釋手的一本小說。此書的描述一個精神病患者跟綜他鎖定的目標，地點在曼哈頓的街道上，經由證實已有4位婦人失蹤，也被認定她們已經死亡，有一天一個男孩(Mack)也失蹤了，失蹤了10年，但他每年的母親節都會打電話給他的母親，並向他的母親報平安，說他過得很好，請大家不用尋找他。
儘管如此，Carolyn(Mack's sister)也覺得事情並非如此簡單，她向紐約警察局報案了，也找了私人偵探，積極地尋找仍無法找到Mack的下落。不死心的Carolyn下定決心要找到Mack，她愈這樣做愈把她自己推向危險之中。之後又發生接二連三的失蹤事件，都與Mack的案件相關。
